I want to share with you, over the course of the next week, a study I did on a familiar passage of Scripture, Luke 8:11-15. I want to take my time over the course of the next week in hopes that you will fully understand these incredible Scriptures.
Today, I want to talk about Luke 8:11-13 KJV: “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.”
- We have to first understand that the seed spoken of is the word of God.
- Verse 12 explains those who do not believe. They hear the word and the devil comes to steal it out of their hearts so that they will not believe and be saved. We can use this to focus our prayers to those that do not believe.
A sample prayer:
Father, I thank you for ___________. I thank You that as they hear the word of God, You will bind the devil from their hearts so they can believe and be saved. I thank You that ______________ will come to the saving knowledge of Christ and experience Your amazing love. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
- Verse 13 and 14 talk to Christians, those that believe in God. You have accepted Jesus as your Savior. You go to church. You read the Bible. You hear the word of God and receive it with joy. However, in verse 13, if you have no root, no relationship with God and Jesus, then after a while, when temptations come, you fall away.
We are called to not just go to church on Sunday and then live how we want to Monday through Saturday. We are all responsible for building our own relationship with Jesus. We need to spend time daily with Him, reading the Word, praying, and talking to Jesus, so when temptation or adversity comes we will lean on the rock and not stumble over it.
You don’t generally hear of someone falling over a large rock. You will generally hear that someone stumbled on a stone or small rock. The smaller the rock, the easier it is to stumble and fall. So the question is, “How big is Jesus in your life?”
If you find that you spend too little time with Jesus, it is not too late. Start spending more time with Him today. You may be saying, “Chantel, you have no idea how little time I have.” I do understand, and I admit I have learned that if you want something bad enough you find a way. Think about the secure relationships you have today, did you not put forth effort to get to where you are today? You had to. I know that life is busy, but we can be creative. Pray on your way to work or on the way home. Pray at lunch. Pray while talking a bath or shower. You can do it if you want it bad enough. Jesus is waiting with open arms. I pray that you will choose Jesus today.
Prayer: Father, I pray in the name of Jesus that you will show me where I am lacking in my relationship with You. Give me creative ideas to spend more time with You. I seek a relationship with Jesus. I want to know Him. I want to know Your thoughts Father, Your ways. As I pray and as I read Your Word, I pray for wisdom and understanding to flood my heart so that I may comprehend and apply what I read. I want to thank You for never giving up on me. Thank You for loving me. Create in me a new heart so I can love people the way that You love them. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
